The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) congratulates our Federation, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) on its 30th Anniversary and May Day Celebrations which took place across the country, with the main Rally held at the Curries Fountain Stadium in Durban, the same venue which gave birth to this unparalleled workers’ Federation.

The Rally was attended by thousands of members from the Mass Democratic Movement (MDM) structures who earlier painted the Durban Central Business District (CBD) red while marching from the Gugu Dlamini Amphitheatre, at the workshop to the stadium. The march was led by alliance leaders and the South African Communist Party (SACP) General Secretary Blade Nzimande, COSATU President Sidumo Dlamini, South African National Civic Organisation Richard Mdakane, the African National Congress (ANC) and State President Jacob Zuma addressed the workers.

There is a famous saying that you cannot win in the boardroom what you have not won on the streets, a point which has finally put to question the ‘credibility’ and exposed our detractors in broad daylight for everyone to see. The workers’ turnout in the celebrations indeed nullified the myths our cynics had been preoccupied with, in their ill-conceived attempts to divide the Federation on the basis of glorifying an individual over workers’ interests.

This day has demonstrated that workers refuse to be weakened by such individuals who unsuccessfully attempt to undermine their thinking rights with the aim of destroying the revolutionary Alliance.

As POPCRU, we declare this year’s workers’ day celebrations as a huge success which we pride ourselves. We are encouraged and urge workers to continue going out to workplaces and communities in defending our terrain.

Let us close ranks, Let us ensure;

  • One Country, One Federation
  • One Industry-One Union
  • International Solidarity
  • Organizational Discipline
  • Workers’ Control and;
  • Paid Up Members
