The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) wishes to categorically thank ordinary members of the community for their role in combating crime. This in light of the tip-offs that have led to 22 suspects being arrested over the weekend and the recovery of 20 illegal firearms around Johannesburg and Pretoria over the past weekend.

We have continuously emphasised the urgent need for community members to work closely with law enforcement agencies, as the need to combat criminal acts is the responsibility of us all.

Many a times, the number of murders, hijacks and robberies we find around us are as a result of these illegal firearms, and these arrests interpret a step forward in saving the many lives that could have otherwise been lost. For us, a gun out of the hands of criminals means a life spared.

We urge all communities to act likewise in promoting good working relations with the police in ensuring our communities are crime-free environments.
