The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU)  supports the National Union of Mineworkers’ (NUM) national strike against Eskom for the continued apartheid wage disparities based on race, a 10% wage increase for lowest paid employees, an 8,5% wage increase for higher earning employees and a housing allowance of R3000 for all.

We are of the view that these justified demands go long into uplifting workers from the dire economic conditions where consumer goods prices are ever-increasing.

The apartheid-style wage disparities for similar work should urgently be dealt away with as it cannot be acceptable that after 22 years into our democracy, similar outdone practices are being perpetrated by an organ such as Eskom.

We call on the management to urgently do away with these disparities and heed to the reasonable wage demands put forth by the employees’ representatives under the banner of the NUM.
