POPCRU statement on the sentencing of Lamoer

The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) welcomes the sentencing of former Western Cape Provincial Police Commissioner Arno Lamoer on corruption charges.

We are of the view that this sentencing will go a long way into demonstrating that no one is above the law, and those in positions of leadership should refrain from such acts and lead by example.

These unfortunate acts have served to damage the image of policing in the eyes of the populace, and therefore creating a low morale among our many police officers who remain committed to serving the people of South Africa with pride and dignity.

We urge the National Police Commissioner to work on improving vetting processes within the SAPS, and hope this sentencing will bring about renewed hope in the fight against crime and corruption.
