The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of eight Correctional Services officers who were involved in a car accident while on their way to work at the Buffelsjagrivier Correctional Centre in the Western Cape this morning.

The minibus they were travelling in collided with a Ford bakkie and a truck about 4km outside Swellendam, leaving others critically injured. The Union is still reeling in shock as we have lost dedicated members who contributed immensely in the country’s rehabilitation programme, and we are appalled by the escalating numbers of road crashes and fatalities in recent times.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and communities of the eight officers under this difficult time while wishing the survivors a speedy recovery.  We urge all motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant on the roads at all times.
