The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) is appalled by the escalating number of police killings as witnessed in the past months. The recent death of Constable F.M Ledwaba who was shot dead and his firearm stolen by perpetrators while responding to an armed robbery at Johannesburg Park Station has left us shaken. Countless dedicated officers have been robbed their lives by criminals whose mission is to destabilise our communities through their criminal acts.

Our members in the South African Police Service (SAPS) remain committed to living up to the vision of the service; to create a safe and secure environment for all the people in South Africa. It is disturbing that a portion of the greater society is fighting this vision and challenging the laws that govern us as a nation. POPCRU calls for an end on police killings and urges anyone with information that may lead to the arrests of those responsible for the deaths of our fallen heroes to come forward. The killing of police officers is an attack on every South African as they are the only barrier that exists between us and total anarchy.

We make a humble plea to our government to speed up gun laws through the draft bill which aims to tighten controls and we also call for harsher sentences to non- abiding citizens. The union extends its condolences to the Ledwaba family, friends and colleagues of the officer and calls for thorough investigation into this and many other cases so that the culprits are locked up and families get closure.
