The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) has noted the bail application bid by Sandile Nyathikazi, Vika Nzama and Nhlanhleni Nzama who are accused of shooting to death Constables Mthokozeni Myeza and Maisha Mafokoane on the N3 highway near Modderfontein in March this year.

Their actions on the day demonstrate that criminals will stop at nothing in accomplishing their ill-conceived deeds. In one of their confessions, they were on their way to hijack a cargo truck en-route from the OR Tambo International Airport when the deceased Police officers tried to stop them, which led to a gunfire battle where the officers were killed and one survived.

Such offenders who disregard the lives of the defenders of justice are a serious threat to society and put at risk the many lives they cross path with, and we are of the view that they should remain in custody until their cases are concluded. This would at least potentially save further lives from being lost.

We call on communities to establish good working relations with the Police in jointly combating any form of crime as this will ensure safer communities for us all.
