The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) mourns the passing of Constable M.R Myeza and Constable Maisha Casey  Mafokoane who were shot and killed when a shooting  ensued between the police and suspects on the N3 highway near the Modderfontein off-ramp in Johannesburg on Sunday. The shooting left Constable Steven Mafanelo critically injured. All three officers were stationed at the Sandringham police station.

We join the greater South African community in condemning the barbaric attacks against our members. Deliberate attacks against police officers contravene the country’s law and constitute a crime against humanity.

We stand firm with our government by unequivocally condemning all these attacks against the police and we continue to support efforts that address the scourge of this form.

We are also much more concerned about the increasing number of hijackings and armed robberies that are escalating particularly in Gauteng. We cannot rest and fold our arms when police officers are maimed and killed by criminals while executing their duties.

POPCRU extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the two officers and wishes a speedy recovery to Constable Mafanelo.
