The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) mourns the untimely passing on of Comrade Phakiso ‘Sai’ Motaung.

Born on the 28th October 1974, comrade Phakiso gradually grew to become one of the gallant fighters for workers’ rights and stood firm in his conviction for equal treatment in the workplace and beyond.

He started working at the Devon Correctional Centre in 2000, where he immediately joined POPCRU until his untimely death.

He was among those who were fearless in confronting the oppressive regime within the Department of Correctional Services which unilaterally wanted to phase out overtime payment, therefore undermining worker’s rights in that regard. This resulted in his and others’ dismissal from the department.

He demonstrated his unique features by continuing to support other workers who found themselves in such harsh circumstances in the entire Mpumalanga province.

During the time of his untimely passing, he was the Secretary of the POPCRU Standerton Local.

He passed away on the 17th July 2015, and will be buried on the 25th July 2015 at Sakhile Community Hall, 10h00am.

His contribution and commitment to workers’ freedoms will never go unnoticed. The struggle continues!
