The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) in the Eastern Cape Province has learned with a heavy heart the unfortunate inferno incident which took place at the Wellington Prison, resulting in the loss of lives and injuries.

It is reported that the Area Commissioner, John Msimango’s house was engulfed by the fire at around 21h00 on Tuesday night, consuming all in its path.

This incident has left the Area Commission and his youngest child alive and hospitalised, while it has unfortunately not spared the lives of his wife and two other kids.

We wish to express our sincerest condolences to the family, comrades and friends of the Msimango’s family, and with the Area Commissioner and youngest child a speedy recovery.

We call on police to speed up investigations into the matter.
