The triple murders of police officers in the Western Cape have left members and the leadership of the Police and Prisons Civil Rights union reeling in shock. Two officers were killed while attending to an abandoned stolen vehicle in Nyanga. The firearms of the two officers were stolen by the suspects who fled the scene. The third case is that of an officer who was killed while off duty in Mfuleni. We are saddened by the loss of these officers who put their lives on the line for the sake of our peace as a country.

POPCRU is requesting the cooperation of civil society organisations and members of the public in its oncoming campaign against police killings. The organisation has been taking part in several initiatives that look at ways of curbing the killing of police officers in our society, but we will be escalating this to a national campaign which we hope will stop these criminals in their tracks. The killing of police officers is an attack on every South African as the only barrier that exists between us and total anarchy is the South African Police Service. It is for this reason that we call on all citizens to be as enraged as us at the killing of police officers and be proactive in ensuring that this crime which has robbed us off many capable officers comes to an immediate end.

The union extends its condolences to the families and colleagues of the officers. Our hearts are burdened with grief and we plead with officers investigating these killings to do so thoroughly so-that the killers can spend all their lives locked up behind bars.
