First Deputy General Secretary
Cde Thandi Olive Tsakani Hlatshwayo
Cde Thandi Olive Tsakane Hlatshwayo grew up in Giyani, Limpopo and joined the Department of Correctional Services in 1999, working at Thohoyandou Management Area as a Educationist. As a comrade from SADTU structures, she immediately joined POPCRU in 1999. She came along from her participation in youth structures at the institution of higher learning, a wealth of youth politics from the [University of Turfloop], now the University of Limpopo.
It was at that time that she cut her teeth on political activism, however not actively occupying leadership positions. She developed a keen interest on the Gender Perspectives within the campus, until she was a participant on the Women Desk and she never looked back.
Cde Thandi became actively involved in Trade Union activities ever since 2000 after her election as a Secretary of Thohoyandou “Medium A” Correctional Centre and later she was elected as the Workplace Gender Coordinator, to take stock of women issues on the shop-floor with Management.
In 2002, she became the Secretary of Management Area due to her display of passion to Union matters and later on she was elected as the Deputy Secretary of Thulamela Local in 2006. She was gaining ground on understanding that women issues must be made bread and butter matters at all forums, to eradicate the unlettered legacy of patriarchy and discrimination. Due to her hard work, later she was given the responsibility to become the Acting-Secretary of the Local until being appointed the Limpopo Provincial Gender Coordinator in 2006.
During the Provincial Congress in 2007, she was elected as the Provincial Treasurer, and continued to provide collective wisdom which made Limpopo to gain first position during the POPCRU Central Committee Meeting Awards in 2010, for improved accountability of Finances by structures. And She was also sitting on the Financial Committee [FINCOM]. She has also served as the Deputy Chairperson of COSATU Far North Local from 2009-2011.
She was also actively involved on the Employment Equity Forum as a Deputy Chairperson and also as a co-opted Member of the ANC Raluswielo Branch in Vhembe Region. Cde Thandi was a Deputy Secretary of Man’ombe Branch of SACP before the structures were disbanded due to a Central Committee in 2010. And she was also co-opted in 2011 on the SACP Interim Committee of Lawrence Phokanoka District.
Cde Thandi holds a B.A Degree, a Higher Education Diploma, a Human Resource Management Diploma, a Computer Certificate, an Economic Development Certificate and she is currently pursuing Public Administration Diploma.
On the occasion of the 07th National Congress at Bloemfontein in 2011, Cde Hlatshwayo was duly elected as the First Vice President.
