Cde Bonny Marekwa was born in Kimberley and joined the local SAPS in 1991. After completing her training at Hammanskraal in June 1992, she worked at the Kimberley Police Station. She later joined the Kimberley Crime Prevention Unit/ Sector Policing, before joining the Crime Intelligence Provincial Nodal Point in 2000. In 2004 she took up a post in the Crime Information Analysis Centre. In all the areas of her work she always ensured that her colleagues were treated with respect by managers and commanders. Cde Wilson Tyuthuza recruited Cde Marekwa into POPCRU in 1993. She actively participated in union activities before becoming a Shop Steward in 1995. In 1996 she served as Deputy Secretary in the Provincial interim Gender Structure. These structures were implemented in preparation for the first POPCRU National Gender Conference in 1997 Cde Marekwa was elected to the position of Deputy Secretary for the then Diamond Field Branch in 1996. From 1997 to 1999 she served as Deputy Secretary for the Kimberley Branch. Later she was elected Branch Secretary from 1999 to 2001, when she was elected the Provincial Deputy Secretary, a position she held until Congress in October 2007. She served as Acting Provincial Secretary in the Northern Cape in 2004 and again from December 2005 until October 2007. During her term of office, Cde Marekwa made it a point that POPCRU was well represented in all structures of the three departments in which it organises, as well as in the ANC and SACP. She was elected Treasurer of COSATU Northern Cape and Free State Region from 2001 until 2008. When COSATU Northern Cape was launched to stand on its own as a Province in February 2008, she was again elected Provincial Treasurer, a position she held until Congress in May 2009. Cde Marekwa was further appointed by the Federation (Free State and Northern Cape Province) and represented Labour in the Northern Cape Provincial AIDS Council from 2005 until May 2009. She currently represents Labour at the National Skills Authority. She holds a Diploma in Education and a Certificate in Economic Development.
